Free Intermediate Johnston Crochet Wrap Pattern

Hello my maker friend! Boy oh boy did this design blow up, I knew I had to get this crochet wrap pattern out as soon as possible! This post shares the free crochet wrap pattern for the Johnston Wrap. The Johnston Wrap is an oversized scarf that features a mix of textured stitches and colorwork.

About this elegant crochet wrap

I enjoy designing these rectangle shawls every year. This would be my fourth year in a row of releasing a blanket wrap and I look forward to designing every time.

When designing crochet shawls, I like to experiment with color changes and textured stitches. I would freehand the designs and play around with what stitches and colors go well together. Within the 4 years, I have made just one wrap using a solid color – the Dieppe Wrap. All other designs used different colors.

The Johnston Wrap is made using a combination of simple stitches designed in a way that looks modern and unique. It is a simple design with a classic outlandish look. Due to the basic crochet stitches and row repeat, this wrap is suitable for any skill level. I would say it is the perfect wrap for advanced beginners who want to play around with colorwork.

Construction of The Johnston Wrap

The Johnston Wrap is one of my 4 rectangular shawls to date. This simple shawl carries out the same stitch count all throughout the wrap with cross over stitches for some texture.

Rectangle wraps are made long enough to span wrist to wrist for an elegant drape around the shoulders.

Very simple construction is used for this crochet wrap pattern with no shaping at all. The wrap begins on the long side and made in rows. The pattern indicates the section you are working on for example the “X” stitch section and the herringbone stitch section. Sections are separated with rows of double crochet stitches for a nice and balanced transition.

The edge of this wrap is borderless, however you can always add a border stitch for a more professional finish.

Yarn

For this crochet project I used a combination of my two favorite yarn collections from Lion Brand Yarn, Heartland for the green and Jeans for the yellow gold. These two acrylic yarn choices are perfect for cozy wraps because of their affordability, durability, and texture. Despite being an acrylic yarn, Heartland and Jeans are both very soft and produce wonderful drape. Both yarn are spun airy for a lightweight crochet wrap.

Heartland is my favorite line from Lion Brand Yarn and features an array of different colours inspired by nature. Jeans is inspired by – well – jeans in different hues of blues and greys plus additional top stitch colors. Both lines are worsted weight yarn and hold a generous yardage. You can read all about Jeans yarn here.

  4. Refer to my post “Best way to change yarn color” to achieve a seamless color change when alternating colors.
  5. When working the herringbone stitch portions, the crossed stitches are always raised towards the right side of the wrap. To achieve this, you pass through the front on odd rows and pass through the back on even rows.
