3 Free and Easy Crochet Ghost Patterns for Halloween
This post will show you how to make three different crochet ghost appliques. Crochet appliques just might be my new obsession. I used an applique for my design in the 2021 Traveling Afghan and it sparked so much inspiration! They are quick and easy projects that can transform any garment into a seasonal and festive piece. This spooky season I played around and made three crochet patterns to add to your collection of Halloween appliques.

What can you do with a crochet ghost applique?
Appliques can be used in a lot of different ways. Here is a list of ideas for things you can do with your ghost appliques:
- Ghost coasters – Appliques be used as a stand alone coaster. This is a great way add some spooky details in your home for the halloween season. You can even sew or glue your applique on to a cork coaster it you want something more solid.
- Sewn to a garment – Like I mentioned in the intro, this is a really simple way to transform any garment into a festive piece. You can even change out or play around with your appliques to create unique pieces of clothing every season.
- Ghost decoration – this halloween applique can be used as decoration on the walls, windows, doors, or even hung all around the space. This cute little ghost would be a halloween decor hit!
- Make a ghostly candy bowl – glue a bunch of appliques around a bowl to create a one of a kind candy bowl
- Key chain – simply add a key chain to the applique and you got yourself a cute key holder for the spooky season.
- Earings – a small ghost applique can easily become a quirky and cute halloween earing just by attaching an earing piece.
Making a crochet ghost in different sizes and styles
You can easily make a larger or smaller applique by changing the yarn size and crochet hook size and following the same pattern. Details on the ghost face can be added as you like. For example adding an open mouth, a larger left eye – or right eye if that is what you prefer. You can be totally creative here and remember to have fun.

What yarn should I use?
For this example I used acrylic yarn. Specifically Lion Brand Yarn’s Pound of Love in White. Now, obviously, you wont need a whole pound of yarn to make this small applique. I just happened to have this particular yarn nearby.
For a cleaner look in both appliques and amigurumi, I prefer using cotton yarn. Cotton yarn is very durable and the fibers work up nice and tight so you wont have much pilling or frays causing a blurred halo effect.
Okay, with all of that out of the way, let’s get to the patterns.
Before we begin here are some things you should know:
- Each pattern contains detailed photos of each individual process.
- This project uses basic stitches and requires a basic skill level of crochet knowledge
- These pattern are for non-commercial use only.
- Increases in the pattern made by 2 sc in one stitch should always stack on one another
- Stitches that are separated by a (-) indicate a sequence done in one single space.
- Stitch spaces are separated by commas
- At the end of each row, slip stitch into the top of the 1st st of the row.
Each crochet ghost pattern will need the following:
Worsted weight yarn in White
3.5mm crochet hook
Black yarn for little black eyes or black felt if you prefer to cut and glue on eyes
