Boho Crochet Summer Top – Free Crochet Pattern

About this Boho Summer Top

I am a big fan of summer crochet projects. Working with light and thinner yarn sparks so much creativity for me so when the warmer months are around I just get a jolt of creativity!

For quite some time now, I have been experimenting with different construction styles and stitch work. This top plays around with wavy crochet stitches and border work to create a boho top filled with details but surprisingly easy.

I named this design the Sandbar Top because of its summer and beach feel. The Sandbar top is a layering crochet top which is easy to pair over a swimsuit as a coverup or a plain tank top with shorts for the perfect summer outfit.

Construction of the Sandbar Top

This design is constructed using two rectangles seamed on the sides leaving space for armholes then again in the middle portions leaving a space for the neckline. This construction method is similar to my Wanderlust Sweater and Jasper Coverup. The rectangles are worked by making long lengthwise strips for a side-to-side construction. The garment is completed with a lace edge on the bottom with medallions for a fringe look like in my Louise Belle Sweater and Sand Dollar Beach Blanket.

For the stitches I played around with a wavy flat crochet stitch sequence repeat. This was done by adding chain spaces and varied stitch heights. It was so fun experimenting with this stitch and once you get the hang of it, it is extremely easy! I really love projects that look complicated but are actually quite easy.

For this boho crochet summer top I used Lion brand Yarn’s Coboo in the colorway Russet.

Coboo is a 51% Cotton, 49% Rayon from Bamboo yarn which is very light to touch and absorbent. It is similar to Truboo which is a 100% bamboo yarn. This makes is feel so nice on the body, eco friendly, and amazing drape.

A close alternative to this yarn would be Lion Brand Yarn’s 24/7 Cotton DK. This yarn is highly comparable to Paintbox Yarn’s Cotton DK, however with less color options BUT more yardage.

Cotton yarn can get stiff worked up and after washes and use. If drape is what you are aiming for, I would recommend a cotton blend. Still cotton for sweat absorption and airiness, but a blend of something like silk or bamboo makes it extra cool and drapes beautifully.

I would highly recommend King Cole Bamboo Cotton or Lion Brand Yarn’s Truboo.

At the end of the day, any CYC 3 Yarn would work, just make sure to make a gauge with a 3.5mm hook to make sure you get the right measurements/results.

Sandbar Top Crochet Pattern

Let’s dive into making this boho crochet summer top! This is actually a very quick crochet garment that you can make in a couple of days! First off, this is a free crochet pattern for the Sandbar Top. If you are a visual learner, you can get the premium ad-free pattern. Pattern notes:

1. Sizes are written as follows XS/S (M, L, XL/2X, 3X/4X). 
2. The picture shows a 5’2 female wearing size M. Modifications done included shortened length (lying flat) of 17” to account for a shorter waist length in comparison to the standard length according to the CYC. 
3. When a row begins with a sc, the ch 1 is not counted as a st and you will be crocheting your 1st sc into the same first st space. (ex. ch1-sc in the patterns indicates to sc in the same space)
4. When a row begins with a ch 2 this is counted as the first st and is considered a Dc. Your next st will be placed in the next st space
5. When a row begins with a ch 3, this is counted as the first st and is considered a Tr. Your next st will be placed in the next st space. 
6. For rows with ch spaces, the ch between sts are counted as a st in the final st count for convenience and easier tracking of st counts

Materials:

1. CYC 3 yarn. I used Lion brand Yarn Coboo Russet 835-104H  4 (4, 5, 5, 6) balls for XS/S (M, L, XL/2X, 3X/4X) respectively
2. 3.5mm crochet hook
3. Scissors
4. Needle for seaming

Repeat Row 2-21 respectively until you reach 25 (30, 35, 40, 45 rows)

For XS/S (L, 3X/4X) only:

R26 (36, 46): ch 2, dc in each st and ch space down the row. (209, 225, 241 sts)

Assembly

Fold the rectangles of your Sandbar Top in half and mark the fold. This is essentially the 105th (105th, 113st, 113th, 121st) st of the row.

Note: Do not fasten off or close the seam too tight yet. We are going to try on out top before finalizing our seams. 

You are now going to seam the sides closed leaving an opening for the armhole. 

From the fold measure 7 (7.5, 8, 9, 10) inches mark with a stitch marker. You can opt to follow the armhole depth measurements on the size chart for your specific size. Seam from the bottom to the stitch marker using a whip stitch. Repeat on the outer edge of the second panel.

You are now going to seam the middle portion for the back and front panel creating a neckline opening. Do not fasten off until you try it on.

Seam the back using a mattress stitch from the bottom up to roughly 4 (4, 5, 6, 6) inches from the fold. 

Seam the front using a mattress stitch from the bottom up to roughly 9 (10, 10.5, 11.5, 12.5) inches from the fold. 

Try the top on. Adjust the seams as needed. Once you are comfortable with the fit, tighten and fasten off the seam, weave in your ends.

Lace edge

You are almost done with your boho crochet summer top! Just the bottom edge.

Attach your yarn to the middle portion of the back where the panels were seamed together. 

Rate description: For every 10 rows you are going to make 16 single crochet stitches. This will evenly come out as a sc in every sc st, 2 sc for every dc (one at the base and one on the bar), and 3 sc for every tr (one at the base and 2 on the bar). You should have a total of 160 (192, 224, 256, 288) sts.

Note: for XS/S, L, and 3X/4X (or if you made adjustments to width with a total row count that ended in 5), following the sc rate description above, you will have 2 extra stitches due to the last row that was added. For these sizes try to skip 2 sts to meet the required number of sts. 

R1: Ch 1-sc, sc all around bottom following sc rate description above. Slst to the top of the first st. (160, 192, 224, 256, 288)

R2: Ch 1-sc, sc, sc, *ch 9, skip 3, sc in next 5 sts. Repeat from * until last 5 sts. Ch 9, skip 3, sc, sc. Slst. [you should have 20 (24, 28, 32, 36) repeat sequence]

R3: Ch1-sc, sc, *ch 5, sc into ch space below, ch 5, skip 1, sc in next 3 sts. Repeat from * until last loop. Ch 5, sc into ch space below, ch 5, skip 1, sc into last st. Slst. 

R4: Ch 1-sc, *ch 6, sc into st below, ch 6, skip 1, sc in middle st. Repeat from * until last ch 6 and slst into first st to end the row.

Note special stitch for last round.

Special Stitch (all in one st space): sc, ch 2, 4 dc into same st, ch 2, sc

R5: Ch 1-sc, *ch 6, special stitch, ch 6, sc in st below. Repeat from * until last ch 6 and slst into first st to end the row

Fasten off

You now have a new boho crochet summer top!
